Analysing Steam Data: A Week into My Game's Page Launch

Updated: Sep 29, 2024

It’s been just over a week since I launched the Steam page for Separated by Nightmares: The Last Stand, and the data I’ve gathered is already pretty fascinating. While the game itself hasn’t been released yet, the traffic insights from the page have been really valuable. If you're a new game developer like me, Steam's data can provide crucial information on adjusting your marketing strategies.

Steam Traffic Breakdown

  • Impressions: 1.3K

  • Visits: 300

  • Bot Traffic: Initially 70%, now down to 13% (thankfully!!)

Interestingly, about 70% of my traffic comes from external sources like social media. This suggests that platforms like TikTok and Twitter are playing a major role in driving people to the page. So far, TikTok seems to be the more effective platform, with Twitter only contributing about 3% of the traffic.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Focus on Social Media: Keep testing platforms like TikTok to drive traffic. If you’re seeing low engagement on Twitter, it might not be worth your time.

  2. Optimize Your Page: If your click-through rates (CTR) are low, consider updating your thumbnail, title, or overall page design to attract more visitors.

  3. Consider Localization: Steam's data shows which countries are visiting your page. I’ve seen unexpected traffic from Russia, which has got me thinking about potential localisation to reach those audiences.

Test Your Marketing Efforts

If you're promoting on multiple platforms, try posting on different days to see what works best. For example, post on TikTok on certain days, and Twitter on others. Afterward, compare the traffic data on Steam to figure out which platform is most effective.

Also, a tip for TikTok: Avoid using phrases like "wishlist my game" or adding links in your posts. TikTok tends to shadow-ban content like this, so focus on creating engaging content that naturally draws people to your page.

Wishlisting and YouTube Guide

If you'd like to stay updated when my game is published and help boost its visibility, consider wishlisting Separated by Nightmares: The Last Stand on Steam. It’s a small action that makes a big difference for indie developer like me!
